Greetings! The /r/spikes community is hosting a free, competitive Standard tournament to kick off the release of Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths.

This will be largely a trial run of a tournament format that /r/spikes will tailor and adjust to moving forward. We want to offer a means of playing competitively amidst the current crises around the world, without risk.

For this first tournament, the cap will be 128 Players. This will be a double-elimination event. Please be available for the day of May 9, 2020. The tournament will begin at 9:00am PDT (12:00pm EDT/4:00pm GMT). Future events will cater to other time zones. We apologize if you cannot attend due to timing.

MTGMelee Account Required. Please sign up for your free account in advance of the event to get used to the environment!

Please join the /r/spikes Discord prior to the tournament. Invite code and day-of announcements will be posted there!

Decklists
Required and Public. Submit decklists no later than 9:00am PDT on May 9, 2020 via the tournament page on MTGMelee. If you do not submit a decklist, you will be dropped from the event automatically!

Check-In

  • Check in begins at 7:30am PDT/10:30am EDT/2:30pm GMT on May 9, 2020.
  • Please check in before 9:00am PDT/12:00pm EDT/4:00pm GMT via the Player Controller. Those who do not check in will be dropped.

Round Structure
Double Elimination (128-Player cap, ~10 rounds). Fewer players will dictate the number of rounds, but expect a ceiling of 10. Once you lose 2 matches, you will be dropped from the event. Note: Should a situation occur where all remaining players have one loss, the player who was undefeated the longest amount of time will be 'promoted' to the winner's side of the finals.

Match Structure

  • Your source of truth will be in your "Player Controller".
  • Pairings will be announced in the Player Controller (SMS, Voice, etc. depending on your settings). Your current round pairings will be visible in the "Current Pairing" section.
  • You must check-in to your match within 5 minutes of pairings (use the green button). Failure to check in within 5 minutes will result in being dropped.
  • Your opponent's decklist will be visible in the bottom left corner of the controller.
  • Challenge your opponent using their MTG Arena screen name (including the numbers to the right of the "#" sign. Use the 'Tournament Match' direct challenge option.
  • BOTH PLAYERS ARE TO SUBMIT THEIR MATCH RESULT.
  • Intentional Draws (IDs) are not allowed.

Prizes

  • Top 8: Discord and /r/spikes subreddit shout-out, along with decklist posted
  • Winner: Custom Discord role and Subreddit flair lasting until the next tournament

Issues During Match/Event

  • Problems can usually be resolved through communication with a /r/spikes mod. If you have an issue with MTGMelee, your match, or any other during-tournament problem, Ping a mod immediately in the #tournament-operations channel (Use @Mod).
  • Take Screenshots of your Victory screen as proof of your win. Include both player names in the screenshot for verification. If there is a player dispute, we will ask for these.
